Frequently Asked Questions

[1] How did PGX develop its grading standards?

Over a period of many months we consulted with comic book dealers, industry professionals, experienced graders, and collectors from around the United States. We showed them a group of books in varying conditions and asked for their opinions, suggestions, and general thoughts on the grading process. Taking the average of the information we received, we created what we believe will be the most widely accepted set of grading standards in the hobby.

[2] How are you able to offer such competitive prices?

From our very inception, one of PGX's main goals has been to operate as cost-effectively as possible. Entering a very strong market for grading services, we have chosen to forego a large profit margin in order to offer excellent value to our customers and quickly grow our business. We strongly believe this strategy, along with our commitment to satisfying our customers, will build a large base of loyal customers. Despite our low cost, every comic book that comes through PGX undergoes the full grading process.

[3] If the comic is taken out of the holder, is the certification you provide still valid?

No. Once a comic book is taken out of its holder, or once the hologram seals on the holder are broken, certification is no longer valid. Books that have been taken out of the holder and are sent back to PGX with the broken certification label are entitled to a 15% discount for re-grading. The certification label is use to verify the discount. Returned comic books are put through the full grading process. Please note that re-graded comic books are not guaranteed to receive the same grade they previously had due to the possibility of damage that may have occurred after the seals were broken. Instructions for removing your comic from a PGX Holder may be found here.

[4] Will PGX certify books that are sealed in poly-bags?

No. We do not certify comic books sealed in poly-bags because these books cannot be examined carefully page by page. When sending sealed books to PGX, please include written permission allowing PGX to remove the book from its poly-bag, or you can remove the comic book from its poly-bag before sending it in.

[5] How does PGX intend to make its presence known in the comic book marketplace?

Three ways: accurate and consistent grading, low prices, and quick turnaround time. As our reputation grows, we will become an ever increasing force in the independent-grading market. In addition, the year we spent putting together PGX gave us ample time to talk to comic book collectors, marketing professionals, and do intensive research as we tried to determine what our customers would be looking for in a grading service. Not content to simply satisfy customer demands, we are committed to exceeding them by delivering the highest quality products and services, such as:

  • The lowest prices and fastest turnaround times in the market.
  • The strongest, most durable comic-holder on the market.
  • The easiest and most convenient method for submitting your comics.
  • The inclusion in the holder of free-floating items, such as 3-D glasses or certificates.

[6] I have no idea what the Fair Market Value is for my comic books. What do I do?

You can see many comics being sold on to get an idea of their FMV. You can also use price guides such as the Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide or Wizard Magazine.

[7] What does "Security No." mean on the Submission Form?

This is the 3-digit number on the back of your charge card.
